Behind The ScenesPlastic Bottle Photo Challenge

Hello Internet! Im Ievgen from Iezhachenko Visuals Today I'm going to share the creative process and the technical stuff behind my photos from the Plastic Bottle episode of the Ordinary Things Unordinary Photos challenge Let's review once more results of my challenge attempt Now I will go through photos one by one I will list the gear which was essential for making the photo and I will show the creative process steps You can find the full list of the equipment I use in the video description I will be posting the resulting image to Instagram so my crop proportions are limited to either 1x1 or 4x5 Now let's start with the first photo For this one, I wanted to get a really close-up shot so nothing clutter the composition and attention focus remains on a dye swirls. I used the Canon SL2, which also know as 200D. And the Canon EFS 55-250 millimeter lens Together they give the most significant amount of magnification I have at my disposal First, I set up the frame as I wanted to see it I focused manually on a front of the bottle. Color is nice.

Light is nice I decided to give it a try My wife assisted me and added a few drops of a food dye to the bottle while I was doing the continuous shooting I thought that it would be great to make dye brighter So I added a LED video light right behind the bottle Then we tried to add red and green dyes simultaneously Unfortunately, they mixed immediately and transformed into something similar by color to a strong tea We started to experiment with the dye addition intervals and the position of the straw in the bottle during the injection We even tried creating a vortex by using the straw to create a whirlpool in a bottle before adding the dye After all, I returned to one of the first photos I really like the blue color of the bottle here The composition is meh, so I started cropping the image The objective was to remove as much as possible without losing the main point The new picture is much better in terms of composition than the previous one but it lost all connections to a plastic bottle. And it looks too dull I added a bit more of a bottle texture to an image Improved the color vibrance and here is what I have as a result because of the scratches on a plastic surface, it looks like it was painted For the next photo I wanted to create a feeling of mystery So I borrowed LED light from one of my wife's project and I used a black wooden disk, which I will talk about later I used Sony A7RIII with Sony F4 24-105 millimeter lens, because this is a full frame camera with a good low light performance. I mounted it on a tripod and we started to build the image story After getting the desired exposure, I saw that the light from the bottle is too harsh And the bottle is too clear for the mood I wanted to create I added a bit of the soy milk into the bottle to make water cloudy Light became much softer, but now the image is too dark Besides diffusing the light, the milk also blocks part of it. I tried to increase the exposure to see the model's face but it completely destroyed the mood I reduced the exposure back and asked Lena to move her face closer to the bottle Now we have the desired atmosphere I cropped the image and changed the light color Here is the end result For the next shot I needed a really low point of view I am not a big fan of laying around in a wet grass for unknown amount of time So I had come up with something Thankfully, I have a Manfrotto 190 tripod with Manfrotto ball head This combination can do a few impressive moves.

Here is one of them As a result, I have a low point view with very stable mount and aligned horizon I used  Sony A7RIII again. Its ability to do fast continuous shooting and a big buffer Really adds up to chances to capture needed moment To achieve the shallow depth of field I zoomed the lens to the maximum and I opened the aperture as wide as possible Such shallow depth of field helps to remove unwanted details from the shot I set the shutter to 1/1000 of a second to freeze the fast action. At first, I put the bottle's face on the lower left crossing Of the rule of third lines. But that looks unbalanced, and it doesn't convey the desired message Putting the bottle on the lower line of rule of thirds and the central axis of the frame, emphasizes it Now we need to create a threat to the bottle In the resulting composition, I like the shadow from the feet on the bottle It really adds to overall mood The composition here is balanced A bit blurred feet add suspense to the story After that, I did cropping, tweaked lighting and colors The next shot wasn't tricky in terms of photography, but it required some persuasion.

I had to convince a model with a diving phobia to pour a reasonably cold water on her face time after time in a public place I used Sony A7RIII here again because of its shooting capabilities The first shot was terrible in terms of composition The sky was blown out and is completely destroyed details in a bottle Here you can see how extremely comfortable my beautiful wife feels We didn't had much room for maneuver at that location So I reduced depth of field to clean up the background After that, we took a lot of shots to capture good water stream, bottle angle and facial expression same time This image isn't bad. But it has too much stuff in it The bottle is also too bright and lost details This is what I got after post-processing it For the next shot I wanted to create a feeling of a power which is frozen, but ready to burst anytime It required a non-standard piece of equipment I wanted a portable table which we can bring on set I bought a round wooden cutting board drilled a hole in it and painted black, by the way, I used it in a glowing bottle shot to hide LED wires and put a bottle on Now I can screw that disc on any standard tripod and get stable and relative a light portable table Despite using sony  Sony A7RIII, the most common situation was when on one shot I had a bottle standing and on the next shot, it is already flying somewhere out of the frame However, that was fun, and Lena wasn't upset by amount of additional attempts Eventually, we made a few good shots This image conveys my idea the best Cropping, light and color correction helped to emphasize the story I hope that was interesting and useful for you If you want to add something to this video format, leave a comment here on YouTube I want to remind you that we ran a photo contest till the 1st of August more details in this video and in the description If you liked the video, click the like button, subscribe don't forget the notification bell, to not skip my next video You can follow me on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter See you next time.
